You see, she has fibromyalgia, a debilitating condition that keeps her at home most days. In fact, in the previous two months before starting her hunt for extra income, she had only been able to work 6 days. If she was not employed by the government, she would have been fired years ago.

Finally she found a company that offered a catalog of thousands of affiliate programs for durable goods. Our daughter only needed to choose the type of goods she was interested in selling. Then the company would build, market and host her website for a year. All this for $6,100!

Our daughter applied what I call “shopping mall” reasoning to this offer. She figured a high price tag must guarantee performance.

But she knew nothing about starting an internet business or the internet companies that prey on people like her. On the internet, price is not a guarantee of quality or performance like it is at the mall. Months later, she is still waiting for them to deliver on just one of their promises.

When I began to suspect our daughter had been victimized, I got out of retirement and began my own investigation.

I’m a former editor and features writer. My career taught me that the key to a good story is research. I know how to search for information and how to evaluate the information I find.
